BITTERSWEET
Bittersweet is inspired by the Sarajevan women, dressed daily in their best, never knowing which day might be their last.

I saw a woman in her finery and asked
"Why are you dressed this way?"
She said, "I never knew when a bullet would find me.
It's a hard habit to break."

(she continued)

Bittersweet, Bittersweet
I am willing to live, but life is so Bittersweet
You tell me, how can we forget
When our senses are so full of memories

To see your family taken from you
To kiss the face of one still in death
To hear the bullets whistle 'round you
And feel so guilty 'cause you're still drawing breath

Bittersweet, Bittersweet
I am willing to live, but life is so Bittersweet
You tell me, how can we forgive
When our senses are so full of memories

To hear the weeping of your neighbor
And taste the salt from your own tears
To smell the fear that seems to linger
For years and years

What I wish that I could remember
Is the warmth of my family
The sweet sound of the words "I love you"
My husband laying next to me
I truly wish that I could remember
The comfort and security

But, unfortunately,
All that I can see
Is my son's face
The day that they took him from me.

I cannot explain it to you
How I will be forever changed
I can only remind you to remember there are so many in pain
In a country with so much abundance it's hard for you to see reality

I can only tell you one thing for sure
It's not what you see on your color TV
